Simon Lane
Piano Adjudicator
Simon Lane has gained recognition for his compelling and sensitive performances, and has collaborated with many of the world’s most exciting musicians including Danielle de Niese, Iestyn Davies, Guy Johnston and Jack Liebeck. His CD release with cellist Philip Higham was selected as Strad Magazine‘s ‘CD of the month’, and Gramophone Magazine stated that “What is most striking about this performance is that, thanks to the brilliance of Simon Lane at the piano, the virtuosity of the piano-writing is thrillingly brought out”.
Alongside frequent performances in London’s Wigmore Hall, Simon has appeared in venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie and the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and more widely across Europe and North America. Festival engagements include the Bachfest Leipzig, La Festival de Musique de Menton, the Dubrovnik and Ljubljana Summer Festivals, and the Leeds Lieder, Ryedale and Lichfield Festivals in the UK. More recently, he has made frequent visits to Norway and Finland, where he particularly enjoys midnight swimming!
Simon studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and the Royal Academy of Music in London, and his teachers have included Mark Ray, Dina Parakhina, Michael Dussek, Julius Drake and Roger Vignoles.
As well as adjudicating piano competitions at schools such as Bryanston and St.Paul's Girls' School, Simon is a committed teacher and chamber music coach, and has been Head of Keyboard at Whitgift School in Croydon since 2016. He is also a chamber music coach at Lancing College in West Sussex.
Among other early influences on his career, Simon is indebted to the late Mark Ray, to whom he owes a large share of his love of music.
